During our topic, 'Food,' we read the story 'Handa's Surprise' in Literacy. This led to us learning about the country 'Kenya' where the story was set. Part of the Early Learning Goal for Understanding the World states 'They know about similarities and differences between themselves and others, and among families, communities and traditions.' and 'They talk about the features of their own immediate environment and how environments might vary from one another.' So the children looked at photos from Kenya and watched the Barnaby Bear DVD in Kenya and talked about similarities and differences between the Kenyan environment and our environment in the UK. We also looked at Kenyan dress and the children dressed a Kenyan child.
