Physical development - fine motor movements

At the beginning of the year in reception, the children engage in activities using their gross motor skills that help to develop their fine motor skills ready for writing. To build up the muscles in their hands, we do 'dough gym' 4 mornings a week. We also use our gross motor skills to learn to write if we are not ready to use pencils yet. This includes writing on wall and the floor with paint brushes to form giant numbers and letters and writing with chunky chalks. We also have large pieces of canvas on the walls in the outdoor area where the children write and draw with marker pens and chalks. The ipads are now used regularly for the children to develop their letter recognition and formation using the letterschool app.
